A British woman died following flash floods and mudslides on the holiday island of Madeira.
Rescue crews and equipment were being flown to the island in the Atlantic after terrifying torrents of muddy water flooded the streets of the capital Funchal at the weekend.
Around five Britons were among 120 injured people being treated in hospital.
People were still missing as First News went to press and there were fears that more than 40 people were killed.
The force of the rushing water was so severe that cars were turned over and trees were felled.
