Eight out of ten people are confused by Cheryl Cole’s accent

80% of British people are confused by Cheryl Cole’s Geordie accent. The survey by Bristol University found that most people can’t understand Cheryl or fellow Geordies Ant and Dec.

Liverpool accents are the second most confusing, followed by Scottish.

Psychologist Dr Peter Collett said regional dialects make life even more confusing.

“If a Geordie describes you as canny, they may mean it as a compliment but if a Scot says the same they may mean you’re sneaky.”
