30 farms break new battery hen law

30 farms in the UK are reported to be breaking a European ban by keeping their hens in battery cages.

The Government says it is disappointed that farmers are still producing eggs using battery hens, but hope that everyone will be following the rules by early February.

In 1999, the European Union announced a ban on battery hens because the hot, cramped conditions were so bad for the chickens.
