15-year-old windsurfing pro, Jade Rogers, talks to First News about the sport
Jade Rogers has just got back from the Windsurfing World Championships in France, where she finished 14th. The life of an athlete never stops, though, so this week she’s also off to compete in the first ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore. We asked the 15-year-old how she does it.
Did the delays for bad weather affect you much at the World Championships?
Yeah, it did a bit. I had a really good first day, when I got a fourth and a ninth place, but then it went sort of downhill from that.
Is there anything you’ve learnt from these championships?
To focus on a race at a time, instead of thinking about the whole competition.
Has it been hard having this competition so close to the YOG?
Yeah, it’s a lot to think about in such a short period of time. When I found out I was going to Singapore, we did a lot more training than I was doing before.
How did you first get into windsurfing?
My dad took me to Carsington Water and put me on a windsurfing day, but I didn’t really like it ’cause I couldn’t do it! But he took me back again and I could do a bit better then, so I just stuck at it.
What advice would you give if any First News readers wanted to try it?
At first, you won’t be able to do it very well and you’ll think you’re absolutely pathetic, but when you’ve got your balance right it’ll be easier. So just stick at it for a while before you decide if you want to do it or not.
What did you think about the YOG when you first heard about them?
Well, I didn’t know that I’d have a chance of getting picked anyway, so I wasn’t really fussed, I was just bothered about doing well at the qualifying events.
Do you think it gives young athletes something more to aim for?
Yeah, because obviously it’s harder to get into the main Olympics, so it’ll give people a stepping stone towards them and help them get more experience.
Are you excited or nervous?
I’m excited, because Tom Daley’s going!
Are you a fan of him or his diving?
Both!
How have you coped with mixing sport and your education?
Well, my school’s been pretty supportive, giving me days off and everything, but I just have to do all my school work in the week. I try and get as much done at school as I can, but it’s hard. There’s so much to do.
Which subjects are you best and worst at?
My best subjects are probably art and PE, and my worst is French. I just can’t pick it up. I can’t remember the words!
What will you be taking to Singapore to keep you amused on the flight?
Sweets! And my iPod, but that’s probably about it.
