Nicky Cox is unique in her field of journalism. She is recognised as the leading authority in the country in children’s journalism, having used her drive, enthusiasm and shear creativity and commitment over more than 20 years to secure a place in the history of journalism.
Nicky launched First News – the only national weekly newspaper for children – in 2006 after nurturing the idea for her whole career. First News has successfully acquired a readership of 763,000 every week demonstrating just how much the newspaper is growing and how instrumental it has become in the lives of children and schools.
More recently, Nicky worked on the successful launch of First TV - the web TV channel for young people which is digitally streamed over the internet. The first show aired on 16th July 2010 and was followed by a series of specials throughout the summer reaching an audience of 60,000.
In past roles, Nicky worked at the BBC for 14 years as Editorial Director of the Children’s Division, and was a BAFTA judge for children’s programming. Nicky was also involved in developing concepts for many children’s television programmes and was Executive producer for several BBC Live Events as well as being involved with ChildLine from launch.
In 2009 Nicky was delighted to be awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for her services to children.
