You all have greatness inside you...
It's my favourite time of the year when Hank Zipzer author, Henry Winkler OBE, and I get to visit thousands of children all over the country as part of our My Way! campaign.
THE MY WAY MESSAGE
For the second time in 2011, Henry Winkler OBE and I have been touring schools and theatres with our My Way! campaign. Our message is simple: “No matter how you learn, every single one of you has greatness inside you. Your job is to dig it out and give it to the world.”
SUNDAY
We meet families from across the country in London’s Unicorn Theatre. It is an emotional afternoon with a lot of love in the room.
MONDAY
We start the day at the BBC with Henry’s appearance on Radio 2, before heading to North Borough Junior school in Maidstone for a wonderful afternoon.
Then we head straight back to London for Henry’s interview on The One Show. He is joined by My Way! dyslexic campaigner, Alfie Smith, 11.
TUESDAY
An early start with Henry’s appearance on BBC Breakfast, before heading off to Moon Hall School for dyslexic children in Leigh. Amazing, talented children.
In the afternoon we visit Orleans Park School in Twickenham. After speaking to all the children, Henry opens the school’s new dyslexia unit and is excited to see his name on a plaque.
That evening we have a party in London to celebrate Henry’s OBE award from the Queen for all his work with children in the UK. Friends and celebrities come, ITV’s Daybreak films and special guest Dynamo wows everybody with his magic. See p22.
WEDNESDAY
An even earlier start, arriving at ITV’s Daybreak at 6.30am for Henry’s live interview about My Way! From there we head straight to Sharnbrook, Bedford, to John Gibbard Lower School. Here we are joined by the permanent secretary of state for education, Sir David Bell, and colleagues from the department’s Achievement for All programme. See a report from a pupil on page 30.
From there we head to Heart of England school in Coventry, where the secondary school is joined by three feeder primary schools, so we talk to a lot of children that afternoon.
THURSDAY
Off to Surrey to Howard of Effingham school. Invited along are two primary schools as well – Eastwick and Oakfield.
We have lunch with My Way! sponsors, uDraw, in Woking and thank them for their support. uDraw is a drawing pad that works with consoles on your TV and is a great way to discover your creativity.
FRIDAY
Early in the morning we arrive at Kings Oak Academy in Bristol and talk to a packed audience of children and teachers.
Then we head to the Castle School in Taunton and have lunch with some of the pupils before taking an assembly.
SATURDAY
Henry gets his first rest and fishes for two hours in Lifton, Devon. Thanks to guide Tim and the Arundell Arms he catches his first fish in Europe – a rainbow trout – before releasing it back into the lake.
That afternoon a two-hour queue forms at WH Smith in Exeter, where Henry signs his funny Hank Zipzer books, which have a boy with dyslexia as the hero.
And that’s it until next year. See you then!
