Why do we celebrate at this time of year?

Tinsel, baubles, holly and reindeers, snowflakes, Santa’s grottos and Christmas lights in the streets.

These are the things that remind us Christmas is just around the corner. But why do we celebrate at this time of year?

Christmas – a Christian festival – is thought to have roots in the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, the festivals of the ancient Greeks, the beliefs of the Druids and the folk customs of Europe.

But you don’t have to be from any of these faiths to celebrate it. For lots of people around the world, Christmas Day is a major celebration, no matter what their religious belief.

Some say Christmas has become too much about spending money and receiving presents, rather than a religious festival with a spiritual message.

Whatever your view, it is certainly a good opportunity to talk to your friends and maybe discuss with your family and teachers about why people believe different things and to get a better understanding of each other’s ideas.

Christmas can be a difficult time if you’re not feeling festive, while everyone around you is celebrating and having fun.
