Watch this! A cool new way to see 3D

The craze for 3D has led scientists to develop this fancy little box of tricks, known as the Cubee.

It’s basically five LED screens on a box, although if you want to sound clever you could call it a perspective-corrected hand-held cubic display. It allows a viewer to look at moving images from all angles, and give the impression of full 3D.

You don’t need special glasses to use it, because it monitors the position of your head and changes the images slightly to match.

It is being developed by researchers in Canada at the Human Communication Technologies Lab of the University of British Columbia. Their demo shows how it’s possible to bounce things around in the box or move them with a stylus, and roll a ball through a virtual world.

Different sized Cubees could be used as games consoles and museum displays, as well as to view things like maps, buildings or medical data. The one shown in the picture is called the pCubee, with the 'p' standing for 'personal'.
