The Climate Change Champions blog:2

The Climate Change Champions blog:2

Hi there! My name’s Sebastian Giraud, I’m 14 years old and in year 10 at Ysgol Eifionydd, Porthmadog.

I was appointed in January 2010 after winning a Welsh Assembly Government competition to find six young people passionate about the environment to become a Climate Change Champion. My entry for the competition consisted of creating a PowerPoint Presentation on the importance of the COP15 UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen; followed by an interview and several nervous weeks waiting for that letter to drop through the door!

As a Climate Change Champion I will be delivering messages about the things that we can all do to reduce our carbon footprint and in turn reduce the effects of climate change. Alongside trying to develop green ideas and initiatives in my local community. I shall be attempting to talk to as many young people as I can to gather their opinions, and giving some easy, simple and effective advice to them about how they can reduce their carbon footprint. After all, our generation is the future and if we all work together we can make a big difference!

Young people’s views are important as well, and I intend to take on board the feedback that I get from them and implement their suggestions as my main priority during my time ‘in office’. Alongside the other Champions I will be involved in delivering the Welsh Assembly Government’s Climate Change Strategy, in which I hope to put forward some of the suggestions and ideas from young people that I’ve gathered throughout my year.

Each champion during their term in office is putting into practice a project to help raise awareness about climate change. My project, named ‘EcoTastic’, is an inter-school competition that will hopefully have classes battling against each other to gain the smallest carbon footprint!

Eco-Idea of the Month!

We've all got a carbon footprint. Big or small, it's our own personal measure of how much greenhouse gas we create - the smaller it is, the less impact our lifestyles are having on climate change.

You can calculate your carbon footprint with the Welsh Assembly Government's online carbon calculator at www.walescarbonfootprint.gov.uk. Simply answer some straightforward questions and it will create a personal action plan for you with hints and tips on how you can reduce your carbon footprint.

Remember to keep up to date with what I’m getting up to at my website: www.climatechangechampion.co.uk

The Climate Change Champions is an initiative run by the Welsh Assembly Government to give Welsh teenagers an opportunity to have their voices heard on the climate change subject. The Climate Change Champions will spend a year ‘in office’ talking to their friends, families and local communities on how they can take simple steps to reduce their carbon footprint while saving money at the same time.
