Space storms are coming

Space storms are coming

Scientists have warned that solar flares from space storms could be on the way after spotting unusual activity from the sun.

Every 22 years the sun’s magnetic energy cycle peaks while the number of sun spots – or flares – hits maximum levels every 11 years. Scientists fear the combination of these two events could produce a space storm with huge levels of radiation and solar flares.

Dr Richard Fisher, a NASA scientist, has revealed that the storm will cause the temperature of the sun to rise to 5,500ºC.

NASA has warned that these once-in-a-lifetime space storms, which should happen sometime around 2013, could cause power blackouts, air travel disruption and navigation devices to stop working on Earth.

But don’t panic, Dr Fisher revealed they don’t know how bad the storm will be and the National Risk Register, established to identify dangers to Britain, has plans in place on how to handle a complete power outage.

How bad is this? Is it just a small thing like a power cut every so often or something that will cause power cuts for longer?
