Software has been developed that can track down terrorists by their scanning their noses.

The nose(y) software, called Photoface, scans peoples’ noses to find out who they are. It could be used in the future, instead of scanning eyes, to find illegal immigrants, terrorists and those who steal other peoples’ identity.

This is because it is more difficult to change the shape of someone’s nose than it is to alter their eye colour. Even plastic surgery cannot always change the basic measurements of the nose. And scientists say that it is rare for any two people to have identical nose measurements, so the scan is a good way of discovering someone’s identity.

The nose scan works by taking four images of a person, each photo using different lighting. The places where shadows fall on the nose, help to decide its shape.

Photoface could come in handy for the police and immigration officers, whose job it is to work out people’s identities.
