Seaweed is obesity's new enemy

Seaweed is obesity's new enemy

Scientists think seaweed is the new way of tackling obesity.

In tests, scientists at Newcastle University found that seaweed can reduce the amount of fat that the body takes in from food by over 75%.

Alginate is a natural fibre that is found in sea kelp. The scientists have already tried adding it to bread, and claim that it scored higher than normal bread in taste tests.
They say that if it was added to foods that are eaten every day, three quarters of the fat in a meal will pass through the body instead of being absorbed and causing weight problems.

So far, experiments have been done with an artificial gut, but scientists hope to move onto human trials soon.
