Science picture of the day – planet with a tail
This planet orbits so close to its star that its atmosphere is burning off into space and giving it a tail, just like a comet.
The planet has been studied by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). It is what's known as a gas giant, and has been called HD 209458b. The planet is 153 light years from Earth, weighs slightly less than Jupiter and orbits its star in just three and a half days.
Even though the star is burning HD 209458b up, experts say that it will still take a thousand billion years to destroy the planet completely.
