Science picture of the day – particle accelerator record
Yes, we know that a man pointing at a computer screen isn't very exciting, but what he's looking at is evidence of a new world record.
The man is Mike Lamont and he works at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Today, their Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment reached the highest energy levels ever in a particle accelerator.
Two beams of particles were sent whizzing around the LHC at energies of 3.5TeV (3.5 million million electronvolts). The next step for scientists is to start smashing two beams of particles together, to see what they break into.
This will help them to understand more about the smallest particles that make up everything we see, and understand more about the universe.
