Recycle your Christmas leftovers

The presents have been opened, cards sent and received, and lots of food eaten. So, what can you do with Christmas leftovers?

Not put them in the bin for a start! Unwanted gifts, wrapping paper, cards, decorations or food can all be recycled or reused rather than thrown out.

The Woodland Trust is running its recycling collection scheme for the 14th year. Deposit your cards in the special bins in TK Maxx or Marks & Spencer and they will plant trees on your behalf. Since the scheme began, 700 million cards have been recycled, that’s 13,000 tonnes-worth of card! To find out more go to www.woodlandtrust.org.uk.

If you have clothes, toys or games that you don’t want but are in good condition you can give them to a charity shop to sell and raise money.

Wrapping paper that hasn’t been ripped or torn can be put away to reuse next year. The Christmas tree can go to the recycling centre or, if it’s in a pot, put it outside until next December.

If you have outdoor space you can compost vegetable peelings from your festive feasts. Some councils take peelings and cooked food leftovers to be composted. Find out on your local authority’s website.

If your family have updated their electrical gadgets and appliances, don’t bin the old ones, take them to your local recycling centre instead.
