Keith Brumpton

Reading Champions

Everyone knows a Reading Champion – they’re people who inspire others to get reading. Each week one of our champions tells you a bit about their favourite reads and what they think makes reading so appealing.

Name: Keith Brumpton

Occupation: Keith Brumpton is the author of the Dino FC book series, and the creator of CBBC’s M.I.High. He has also written loads of cartoon series, including 64 Zoo Lane. He divides his time between writing for TV and writing and illustrating books.

Favourite reads: “I started with Thomas the Tank Engine and Paddington Bear. I loved Tintin and Asterix, and comics too: especially those featuring Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. The pictures have always been as important as the words for me. I also read lots of history books and books teaching you how to draw. “

Keith says: “I like reading because it’s like meeting new friends and travelling to new places, except you’re doing it all from the comfort of your own home. I have read a lot from when I first went to school, and joined my local library aged about seven. By the time I left to go to college I think I’d read most of the books in it. There are still new discoveries to be made – new favourite authors.

“Reading feeds your imagination and helps you understand the world. But I also love funny books that do nothing more than make you laugh. To anyone who doesn’t like reading I would say keep trying! Just like there’s different types of music that appeal to different people, so there is with books. And one day you’ll find something that’s perfect for YOU!”
