“Ahoy, my maritime mates! Today we are going to discuss sustainable fishing. Ever heard the saying ‘Plenty more fish in the sea’? Well unfortunately, that isn’t the case anymore and we need to find a way to fish without running out.

“Fishing is one of mankind’s oldest hunting techniques – simple rings of stone were once laid on beaches during low tide. As the water rose, fish would pass over the trap, and as the tide went out, the fish would find themselves trapped. This was a sustainable method.

“Next, fishermen built basic boats. Their small nets meant millions of fish remained free and unharmed. Fishing stayed sustainable until the industrial revolution, when vessels were fitted with mechanical pulleys that cast out huge nets, meaning a greater catch.

“Steam-powered engines allowed all-weather fishing, helping to catch FOUR TIMES as much fish. The open ocean became fishable for the first time! Was this fishing sustainable? No way! Fishing had gone from locals catching enough to feed their families, to an industry that caused serious damage to fish numbers. Today we have many fishing techniques. Can you name any?

“Check out the Fish Camp Kids on a Cornish ring netting vessel and the Catch of the Day game to become a virtual sustainable fisherman yourself!
And be sure to post comments on my blog and let me know which methods damage the ocean. Best fishes, Blowfish.”
