Plastic bottles are an environmental hazard

Plastic bottles are a huge problem for the environment and an average UK household uses 500 of them each year. Since only a fifth of these are recycled, it’d be better for the planet if we didn’t use the bottles in the first place.

Everyone can help to change this, including you, and that’s why the people at SodaStream have launched their World Without Bottles campaign. Although recycling is good for the environment, SodaStream believe in precycling, which means that using fewer bottles in the first place leaves you with less rubbish to recycle.

In 2008, an unbelievable 206 billion litres of bottled water were sold around the world. That’s an awful lot of plastic, but the bottles themselves aren’t the only problem. It takes a lot of oil, water and energy to make plastic, and the bottles also have to be transported around the world and on our roads, which uses up even more valuable energy and produces more harmful emissions.

It is estimated that British households use a total of 13 billion plastic bottles every year. On average, only 100 out of every 500 plastic bottles that your family uses will be recycled.

We can cut down on this huge amount of waste and the World Without Bottles campaign aims to make more people aware of how easy it is to help. If you join our campaign, we can all help to make a bottle-free world!

A very simple way of massively reducing the amount of bottles you use is to try a SodaStream.

Because SodaStream uses water straight from the tap, that means you need fewer plastic bottles, less plastic waste is created, and fewer bottled drinks need to be transported to and from shops.

Making your own fizzy drinks with a SodaStream is simple: all you need to do is add your favourite flavour to tap water, press a button to create some fizz, and that’s it!

In three years, one SodaStream bottle could replace as many as 2,000 plastic bottles and cans.

Not only that, but just one 500ml of SodaStream flavour gives you a huge 12 litres of lovely fizzy drinks. And with everything from cola and lemonade to pink grapefruit, orange and blackcurrant, there’s a flavour for everyone to enjoy!

So how can you reduce bottle waste? Here are our top tips:

1. Avoid drinking bottled water. There’s nothing wrong with the water that comes out of your tap, and it’s free!

2. Use a SodaStream to make your own fizzy drinks from tap water, instead of spending lots of money on bottled fizzy drinks.

3. If you have to buy bottles, try to reuse them. You could use them as plant pots, money jars or anything else that you can think of.

4. If you want to take a drink with you when you go out, use a reusable and washable bottle instead of buying a bottled drink from the shop.
