Pedalling to power Christmas

Pedalling to power Christmas

We powered lights on a Christmas tree with pedal power (a bike)! The plan was to keep the lights going for two whole days! But for the lights to stay on someone had to be pedalling fast!

We had an assembly about saving energy. Mrs Thompson and Mrs McMillan showed us a wind-up torch and explained that it works like filling a bucket that had a hole in the bottom! We charged the bucket by filling it with water and then slowly the water releases through the hole. With a wind-up torch we charge it by winding the handle and then the energy is slowly released while the torch shines. We were then shown our bike and told how our pedalling would make the lights shine. If we didn’t pedal hard enough they would go off!

Four of us then decorated the bike (the three of us and Edward Peel) with recycled things such as scrap paper and empty boxes. We even made decorations for the tree from recycled products.

We try hard to think about energy saving at school and, on Wednesdays, we come to school by bike, scooter or on foot! We do this to reduce the Co2 in the climate.

We hope you enjoyed reading this and took it in!
