Massive lightening storm in Saturn captured by NASA probe

Massive lightning storm in Saturn captured by NASA probe

Researchers have been studying pictures from the longest lightning storm ever seen in our solar system, which raged from January to October last year.

NASA’s Cassini probe has shown scientists that Saturn’s lightning storms are just as powerful as on Earth. Although they can last for months on Saturn, they happen much less often.

Cassini reached Saturn six years ago, but had struggled to see the lightning. That is because the planet and its rings reflect a lot of sunlight, even on the darkest side. During August 2009, Saturn was at its equinox.

This is the time of year when the sun is directly over the equator. This means that hardly any light reflected off the rings onto the dark side of Saturn, meaning that lightning could be seen more clearly.
