KID'S WORLD: Omari
Omari Selemani is eight years old and lives in a village in Tanzania with his mum and his younger brother.
His mother doesn’t know how long Omari had trouble with his eyes because he never complained but, one day, she noticed his left eye was all white. Omari then told his mum that he couldn’t see through it and things were becoming difficult for him.
Omari said: “I was not able to play with my friends any more and I loved school, but I was finding it difficult to keep up with my work.”
Omari’s mum took him to the hospital, where he was told that he had ‘cataract’ (cat-a-ract) in both of his eyes. If somebody has cataract, the lens of their eye becomes cloudy and, after some time, they can’t see anything at all. In a simple operation, the cloudy lens is taken out and a new clear plastic lens is put in, meaning that person can see again.
Omari had this operation and now has a new lens that he can see through.
He said: “When I go back home, I am going to go back to school and do really well. And I won’t hurt my eyes again!”
There are millions of children in the world who are missing out on an education because they are blind. Sightsavers is working hard to find these children and help them.
