Name: Gift Daka Age: 7 Lives: Lusaka, Zambia
Gift had an accident when he was playing with his friends, which caused him to lose his sight in one eye. He got something called Cataract, which is when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This stops light entering the eye, meaning you can’t see anything at all.
Gift dropped out of school after his accident, which he found very difficult. He says:“I used to enjoy playing football with my friends but since my accident I can’t do that anymore. I really like writing at school but can’t do that at the moment. I will be very happy when I can see again. I want to be very strong when I grow up and work in construction, lifting very heavy things. Look at my muscles!”
Gift had his sight saved in a special operation and returned home able to see again. His grandmother was over the moon when she saw him. She had been worried that he would lose his sight in both eyes completely so it was such a relief that he could seeproperly again.
Gift’s grandmother said: “What has been done for my grandson is unforgettable.”
