A life-changing cataract operation has given Emily a new lease of life.

KID'S WORLD: Emily

“I go to Khola Government Primary School in Narsingdi, Bangladesh. I am very happy at school and was elected as a school captain in class 4. I have risen from 32nd to 2nd in my class and I want to be a doctor when I grow up.

“I stay behind at school for two extra hours every day to do extra studies with the help of my teachers as it is difficult for me to study at home.’”

Emily had something called cataract in both her eyes, which meant she could not see very much at all and she had to have operations to save her sight.

Emily says: “I love my mum because she did everything for me before my operation. I feel so happy that I am now able to help her with the daily chores. I also love my father but he is away a lot working as a day labourer. He is not so strong so sometimes he can’t work. He, too, needs an eye operation as he can’t see well.”

“My favourite sights are my mum, my teacher and my school friends. I like to play field games with my school friends and other children from my school.”

There are millions of children in the world who are missing out on education because they are blind or who could be helped to see again. Sightsavers is working hard to find these children and help them. You can learn more about our work supporting children like Emily at: www.sightsavers.org/kidzone.
