Grow your own tomatoes: follow our handy guide!

Grow your own tomatoes: follow our handy guide!

What you need

A growbag, large pot or windowbox

Peat-free compost or soil

If you’re using a pot, bits of broken pot or stones

Tomato plants

A bamboo cane for each plant

String

Watering can

What you do

If you’re using a pot, put some broken bits of another pot or a few big stones in the bottom to help drainage. Then fill the pot with compost. If you’re using a windowbox, fill it with soil to just under the rim. Or cut a hole where marked in the growbag.

Make a hole in the soil big enough to put your plant in. Carefully tip it out of the plastic pot and place it in the hole. Press soil around the roots so that it is firmly in place. Give the soil a good watering.

Carefully push a bamboo cane into the soil a few cms away from the plant so you don’t damage the roots. Using the string, loosely tie the plant stem to the cane. This will give the plant support as it grows.

Once your plant has four or five branches, or trusses, pinch out any shoots that appear where the branches join the main stem. As the plant grows you will need to tie it to the cane further up to give it support.

Once you see a red tomato, pick it and eat it!
