Green new year resolutions
While you’re recycling your Christmas wrapping paper and eating your locally grown Christmas dinner, have a think about what green actions you’re going to take next year.
Here are 20 ideas to be greener in 2011. Pick five and let us know how you get on!
Spend only four minutes in the shower (it’s still enough time to get clean!)
Put veggie peelings in a compost bin
Collect rainwater from a drainpipe in a water butt
Make birthday cards rather than buying them
Give wearable but unwanted clothes to a charity shop
Try shopping for clothes in a charity shop
Try growing a vegetable or a herb from seeds
Take your own reusable bag when you go shopping
Replace ordinary lightbulbs with energy-saving ones
Put on a jumper before you ask for the heating to be turned up
Try walking instead of jumping in the car for a short journey
Buy food grown or reared near to where you live rather than from abroad
Try to eat seasonal food
Repair something instead of binning it and buying new
Swap something with a friend instead of buying new
Join your local library and borrow music and books instead of buying them
Use paper, toilet rolls or kitchen towel made from recycled paper
Plant bee and butterfly-friendly flowers to attract insects to your garden or windowsill
Put food and water out for birds
Drink tap water rather than bottled water
