Giant trees in trouble
A STUDY by American scientists has shown that the famous coast redwood trees in California are in danger because of lower levels of fog in the area.
The trees only live in a narrow 50km-wide area of land along the coast of California. The trees take in lots of water from fog, which is just moisture in the air. The coast redwoods are not very good at regulating their water use, so they cannot adapt to long, dry spells where water supply is reduced.
The study found that the spells of fog along the coast have been reduced by a third since the early 1900s.
