Five minutes with Sam Attwater

We caught up with Dancing on Ice champion Sam Attwater to find out all the gossip about the new Dancing on Ice tour DVD…

What was the highlight of the tour?

Getting to know everyone properly. On the show we trained on so many different ice rinks across the country. Then, when we got to the studio, we all had a different time slot. So it’s always just “hellos” and “goodbyes”, apart from the Sunday show when you get to see everyone, but everyone’s in make-up. So it’s just a time of getting to know everyone and really bond. It was so much fun.

How did it feel to win the show?

It didn’t actually hit me properly until about two days later. It was mad, just feeling like a huge adrenaline rush. It was six months of really hard work, my body was exhausted and I just wanted to collapse on the ice. I didn’t, because that would have looked really silly! But it wasn’t until about two days later, when I was sat in my front room, I looked up and my trophy was on the shelf. It hit me then, and I kind of got a bit emotional!

Were there any embarrassing moments while you were on tour?

There was one in the finale, I don’t know what happened! I was doing a tango skate and I caught my ice pick on the front of the skate. I fell over and slid because, obviously, you don’t just fall, you slide. So I slid for a while and I managed to do some kind of backwards roll and came back up onto my skates. I thought it looked really good, but everyone else said I looked like an absolute idiot.

How did touring compare to taking part in the TV show?

It was so much more relaxed. On the show every week you had to learn your new routine and had this constant stress of learning new moves. On the tour, obviously you’re doing the same few routines every night, so you kind of know them back to front. And then you’ve got the partying! You know, we had Denise Welch, who taught us a thing or two!

Torvill & Dean’s Dancing on Ice the Live Tour 2011 is out on DVD from 14 November.
