First News interviews The Saturdays
Una, Vanessa, Frankie, Rochelle and Mollie talk to First News about their new album, their forthcoming tour and what they think they will argue over!
Tell us a bit about the new album…
Vanessa: We only just picked the songs for it. It’s really exciting for us because we’ve written half of the album, so we’re just really proud.
Rochelle: Yes, we’ve really just taken it on and it’s the first time we’ve been so involved. We’re really excited because it is so personal.
Is that a bit nerve-wracking though?
All: Yes!
Rochelle: We always say that it is personal to us and this time it really is. If people don’t like it, we’ll be like: “Oh no!”
Una: It’s going to be extra special when we’re on stage and we’re performing the new songs. We’ll remember the day we wrote the songs. You’d go into the studio in the morning and it wouldn’t exist. Then, when you left, you had a finished song. To go on stage and perform it and see people singing along will be really special.
Do you sit down together as a group to write the songs?
Vanessa: We kind of split up into twos and threes. It was nice this time, it wasn’t a rush. We took a year to do it. There was no pressure. It was quite fun!
Una: If we had a day off, we’d use it to go into the studio.
Was it hard to choose the songs?
Vanessa: We all kind of knew which ones we wanted, but we have so many songs. The whole group just sat there listening to all of them the other day. We obviously all have different opinions of them and different songs that we like the best. So we played all the tracks and ticked off the ones we definitely wanted, and then debated the other ones.
It’s going to be a very exciting tour, then. Have you got a lot planned?
Mollie: Oh yes, we love to get involved in the planning. We know what we want to do and we’re like: “We wanna do this and come on stage like this.” We get a bit too involved.
Rochelle: Yes, I bet lots of people are like: “Pipe down girls!” There are five of us and five opinions. Five big opinions at that. We dream big and want to do this, this and this and everyone else is like: “Let’s pace ourselves.” When we were on our first tour, our manager had to tell us it was our first tour and not Wembley Stadium. But we’re going to put on a good show.
Where would you love to perform?
Frankie: Madison Square Gardens, New York. That would be a big one.
Mollie: We performed at Wembley Stadium once. That was in the middle of a rugby match, so there was a bit of eye candy too.
Rochelle: On tour we’re performing at Wembley Arena, and that is the big one. Before the days of the 02 Arena, when I was a kid growing up, it was that famous line: “Good evening Wembley!”
Una: Who wants to scream that line?
Frankie: I think we’re all going to want to. We’ll all have to do it together because, if we had to decide, that will be the thing that makes us argue!
You guys have so much fun. What’s the best thing about being a Saturday?
Vanessa: I think it’s just the fact that we love our jobs.
Rochelle: And the fact that we get on together so well.
Mollie: We’ve all always wanted to do this. We’ve always wanted to perform on stage and to make an album. And thank goodness we get along like best friends.
Rochelle: And you’re surrounded by four other people who want the same things, which is why we’re so close. I am close to my friends at home for different reasons. Their worst nightmare would be getting up on stage and doing what we do, so I have never had that in common with them, but I do with these girls!
You’ve launched a nail varnish and a phone app. Are you taking over the world?
Frankie: I just think that, nowadays, beauty, TV and stuff is just becoming one big industry. It’s exciting that everyone can do a bit of everything, it’s nice. As much as we all love our jobs, it’s nice to be able to try something different. Kids love fashion and they buy into it. I know I do. If I see someone wearing something I like, I want it. As girls we all do, even though it may look totally different on us to that person. It’s exciting.
Una: We were like kids when we were choosing the nail varnishes. We loved it and all chose the same colours!
Vanessa: There is a twist to the nail varnishes too. It’s nail varnish with a difference!
