First News interviews One Direction
One Direction are just about to head off on their first ever UK tour, so we sat them down for a chat about their tour plans, their amazing first year and why they keep making their fans cry!
We’re here at a photoshoot for Nintendo. How did you get involved with them?
Harry: It just kind of came about. Obviously we did the adverts and stuff. And there you go!
Niall: Liam is obsessed with the new Pokémon game.
Zayn: But Louis is the best at FIFA.
Liam: It’s true, I am on it every day. I am actually going to have to go to rehab for my Pokémon addiction. I remember watching the movie when I was a kid and it was a such a big deal.
Zayn: I was really addicted to Pokémon when I was a kid. I’d be a fire Pokémon because they look the coolest!
You filmed a documentary about your first year, which was aired recently. What was it like watching that back?
Harry: It was quite weird really, because a lot of the stuff we do just happens and we just go with it. We don’t get to see it like that and see the overview of it. It really showed us how much we’ve done, looking back on things we couldn’t remember. We’ll always have that as a record of our first year.
Liam: It’s great for our parents as well. We’ve been away from home for so long that it’s good for them to see what we’ve been doing.
Louis: It was also a really nice opportunity for our fans to get to know us all a bit more. I really liked the scene where we’re sat with Reggie Yates and he announced our number one. People heard that on the radio, but they didn’t get to see our reactions. They can now!
What is it like seeing the fan mania on screen?
Harry: I look at it like it wasn’t us really. It’s like a documentary on someone else.
Zayn: You kind of forget it’s you.
Niall: I tend to do that too, it is like it’s not us. So it’s not like Harry was crying, just a guy on TV that was crying. Whoever he was.
Harry: That’s right.
Did you get embarrassed seeing yourselves crying and getting upset?
Harry: It’s weird to watch back stuff like that, but I think the thing about the documentary is it showed us that people can relate to us. It didn’t show us as anything special. We’re not robots, we’re normal teenage guys that go through the same stuff as everyone else, while using this amazing opportunity and doing all these amazing things.
How do you cope when girls cry at you?
Niall: I do feel a bit awkward.
Zayn: It can feel quite strange because you don’t understand why they’re having that reaction to you.
Niall: Most of the time they come up and try to be as relaxed as possible. They may have a couple of tears rolling down their face, but when I watched the documentary I saw that they try to be cool and then they walk away and they’re crying and sobbing.
Louis: I think the reason they cry is that sometimes they’ve been waiting more than 24 hours to see us and they’re just so excited and it keeps building up and when they meet us, all their emotions come out.
You’re about to go on your first tour. What will it be like?
Liam: We just want to put on a really big show. We don’t dance a lot, so we just want to make sure it really is a great show. We’re rehearsing lots and so it’s going to be great.
Niall: It’s going to be sick. The tour is done, it is on its way. I am so excited about having a live band right behind me.
Louis: Yes, massively excited about that. We enjoyed the X Factor tour so much but we said, even then, that we would love one day to do our own tour.
Liam: It’s going to be so different, though. Obviously on that show we only did a few songs to see how we would last and now we have an entire show to do. We can’t wait.
Harry: We always sit and talk about ideas and have a meeting to talk about what we can do and what we want to do. We talked a lot about what we want to get from the tour and what songs we want to do. We’re really involved, which means it’ll be a really personal show.
Do you take pointers from other bands?
Harry: I think in terms of performance, a band like Take That are great ones to take advice from. Whatever they do, no matter how small the audience is, they always seem to own it and get everyone joining in. We saw them at Wembley Stadium and to see everyone doing the same thing and singing the same lyrics was amazing.
Can you give us any hints as to what we’ll see at your show?
Liam: We’ve got a little medley of songs, some covers…
Niall: We can’t tell you any more. It’s too secret.
Louis: There are loads of sing-alongs in the tour. There will be lots of well-known songs, so everyone can get involved.
Zayn: Can I tell you what I’m doing?
Others: No!
Niall: It will be good, though. The tickets sold out in 12 minutes, so we have to make it good as a thank you!
We spoke to One Direction to celebrate the launch of Super Pokémon Rumble on Nintendo 3DS, which is out now. One Direction’s debut album Up All Night is also out now.
