First News interviews Matthew Koon

First News interviews Matthew Koon

He wowed the judges and viewers when he appeared on Sky 1’s Got to Dance. Now 16-year-old Matthew Koon is appearing in a music video. He told us all about it…

The project came to life after Rich Nothen from Rakafeed approached me after seeing me on Got To Dance. They were looking for a video to go along with their track Colder and they wanted me to dance in it. I met with Rich and we listened to the track together and shared ideas. I was honestly inspired as soon as I heard the piece and couldn’t wait to be involved. When they told me it was to be filmed underwater I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was so excited to hear that it was to be filmed at the world renowned Pinewood studios.

The concept of the piece was the idea of someone who has a pre-death experience. Just before he dies, he is lifted out of the water and he dances. The whole feel to the video is very ethereal and emotional. I really hope that it comes across well to the viewers.

The filming process was amazing. I never once felt scared as I had a team of about five divers looking after me. I’ve always loved swimming so spending a whole day in a pool was actually really fun. The people who have seen it keep asking how I held my breath for so long. Well, we actually filmed the whole thing in lots of separate chunks. A diver would give me a big breath of air and swim out of shot, I would then be filmed doing my thing, then the diver would come back and give me more air. Also, the parts that were filmed under water have been slowed down, so it really looks like I’m under water a lot longer than I actually was. I really loved the experience and I’ve met some life changing people that I know will look after me!
