First News interviews Marvin from JLS

Super band JLS has just finished a sell-out tour of the UK. Now they’ve teamed up with Tinie Tempah on their new single Eyes Wide Shut. We caught up with Marvin to talk tours, Valentine’s Day and JLS plans for 2011!

Hi, Marvin! How are things in JLS world?

Very good, thanks! We’ve been crazy and busy and we’ve just finished our tour, which was amazing. We had to step it up a lot. It was a lot more hard work and we used a lot more energy because the show was a lot longer. We were flying, we had pyrotechnics, flying cars, fire, there was all sorts of crazy stuff. It was great and we can’t wait for the next one now!

Now you’re back with a new single.

Yes, Eyes Wide Shut, featuring Tinie Tempah, which is a bit different from the album version. We’ve known Tinie for a little while, before he was the huge artist he is now. We’ve always wanted to collaborate. We’ve always talked about it. It just so happens that now we’re both doing well we managed to pull off the collaboration. Tinie is incredible. He’s had an amazing year in 2010 and that’s continuing this year with his BRIT nominations. I think he is the best rapper in the country. He’s a great guy – very professional, very humble and down to earth.

The video is very different from other JLS videos – was it different to film?

It was, yes! We shot the video in October time, which is a long time before. It was shot by these American guys and the whole thing was shot on a green screen. Everything you see in the video, apart from us, is computer imagery. It was a little bit difficult to grasp at first but once you do, you just use your imagination.

Do you still get excited by video shoots?

Definitely, 100%. Not one of our videos has been the same. They’ve all been so different. Love You More was a very good video for us. It was shot in black and white and it was very intimate and very classy. That’s one of my favourite ones. We want it to always be that way. We never want to make a video that’s the same as everyone else. We want to keep it fresh with new ideas.

It’s Valentine’s Day this week. What was Valentine’s Day like when you were at school?

I went to an all boys’ school, so it was pretty rubbish. I think I got one or two cards when I was at primary school but I think I was a bit young to really understand. Valentine’s Day was always a bit strange for me growing up. Hopefully I will get a Valentine’s card this year!

Did you ever send any cards?

I think the first was when I was about ten. I made it myself. I got some red card, and signed it with a question mark. I think if you can make a card you should. It’s a bit more romantic and a bit more special.

Did you have any embarrassing girl moments when you were young?

Yes, for sure. I had one a couple of years ago. I went on this lunchtime date with a girl. I woke up in the morning and I felt pretty rough. I had a bad stomach and a temperature but I thought I couldn’t blow this girl out because that’s not cool. We started to eat and I felt this horrible rumble in my tummy and I had to run to the toilet where I was in a bad way, vomiting and going to the toilet. It was horrendous and I felt terrible. I got back to the table and I almost threw up on the table, I just managed to get away. It was very embarrassing!

If you could go back and give your ten-year-old self some advice what would it be?

To spend more time with my grandparents because, unfortunately, I’ve lost them all now and I wish when I was ten I would have appreciated them a bit more. I think when you’re ten you don’t appreciate them as much as you do when you’re older, or respect what they’ve been through to get you where you are. I would definitely tell myself to spend more time with my grandparents!

The last year has been amazing for you. What are the plans for 2011?

We’ve obviously got the new single then, later in the year, we’ll be writing our third album and recording that. And there’ll be performances from us over the summer all over the country. Plus our 3D film. We’ve got a lot coming up. We don’t ever take our foot off the gas. There are a lot of new boybands coming through that are going to do well and we want to make sure we keep on top of things and keep releasing great music. First and foremost our goal is to keep releasing good records.

Eyes Wide Shut featuring Tinie Tempah is available from 13 February.
