First News interviews Johnny English star Daniel Kaluuya

Daniel Kaluuya stars alongside Rowan Atkinson in the brand new Johnny English film. We find out more…

What is Johnny English Reborn about?

Johnny English is coming back from the wilderness. He spent 20 years away finding himself and he comes back because he is the only person a certain target will talk to. It’s about uncovering secrets from the secret services around the world. It’s really fun and Rowan is at his best playing Johnny English. There are some really smart elements too and great set pieces.

What is your part in the film?

I play Tucker who is the ‘up and comer’ in MI7. He is there to take care of Johnny and make sure he doesn’t mess up like he usually does because, in the first film, he was blowing himself up and stuff.

Do you succeed?

Yes and no. Tucker’s there to help Johnny but Johnny really sees it like: “I’ve been in this job for 20 years so what can you tell me?”

Are you like your character?

Well… I look like him! Other than that, I would say not really!

How did you research your role as Tucker?

I watched every single James Bond film. Plus, when you’re in a suit and tux, it just changes how you hold yourself.

What was the best moment of making the film?

When we did an exterior shot of the casino and we got out of a rickshaw and there was a huge Las Vegas-style casino. It was so hot at night, and it just felt so glamorous. I did my own stunts too – that’s how I roll!

How did you get into acting?

I went to lots of drama clubs and classes. Then, without me realising, I got more confident. I would do this job for free.

Did you have a back-up plan in case acting didn’t work out?

Well, I’m quite good at maths. I got an A* in it at GCSE.

Johnny English Reborn is in cinemas now
