First News interviews Emma Watson

First News interviews Emma Watson

Here at First News we still can’t believe that Harry Potter is over, but we felt a bit better knowing that Emma Watson cried too! We wanted to find out how she felt about it all coming to an end...

How sad was it for you to say goodbye to Hermione?

It feels sad. She feels like an old friend of mine, so it does feel sad, definitely.

Rupert [Grint] was saying he doesn’t think you’ll ever lose touch with each other.  What do you think?  I really hope that he never finds me again [laughs]. No, of course, we grew up together. He’s practically like my brother. There’s no way that we’re losing touch.

Are you scared that people will always see you as Hermione?

It’s funny. Everyone keeps asking me that. I don’t feel scared at all. It’s such an amazing role. She’s such an amazing character that I don’t really want people to forget her.

How responsible did you feel portraying Hermione?

Very. Where else in cinema is there a female character that is not just sort of supplementary or additional or the pretty face? She’s a breakthrough, I think. Ron says at the beginning: “I don’t think we’d get through a day without Hermione.” She’s the brains behind the whole operation and she’s so integral to that trio, and to Harry’s success.

What were your first thoughts when you read the last book?

I cried in a lot of moments. The moment that really got me was Dobby’s death! Ooh, wow, I was really weepy for that. It’s funny, I should have read it thinking I’m going to have to do this, but I didn’t. I just read it from a fan’s perspective.

Does it scare you to have such money at your age, with all the fame and media attention?

The fame aspect has certainly been intimidating and overwhelming at times, and that kind of stigma that surrounds being a child actress. Journalists have actually asked me “do you
think you’re messed up?”  I don’t know what they expect me to say really, “yes,”?   I don’t know really how to answer that!

Was it fun shooting the action scenes?

Well as much as they can prepare you, or put stunt doubles in, there’s a certain amount you have to do yourself. It was a bit scary at times because we didn’t have much training or much warning sometimes.

What was the scariest thing you did?

I threw myself onto the back of a dragon in Gringott’s vault. I had crash mats, I don’t want to exaggerate, but it was a 20 or 30 foot drop (around nine metres), and I just had to dive off. Your body’s saying no, no, no, but you have to just do it!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 is out in the cinemas now
