First News interviews Davina McCall
Presenter Davina McCall is back on our screens hosting the third series of Got To Dance. She fills us in on her dancing skills, why the show is so much fun to work on and her favourite moments from the last series.
What can we expect from series three of Got To Dance?
You can expect even better dancing, if you can believe that’s possible, but there really is. There’s so much variety and our contestants have put in a lot of hard work. There’s hunger and passion and it never ceases to make you smile.
How do you ensure the series stays fresh and exciting?
Watching brilliant dancers never gets boring. My hunger for it certainly never goes away or lessens. I’ve got a DVD of the semi-finalists and I’ve watched it time and time again, and I’m still not bored.
What sets Got to Dance apart from other search-for-a-star formats?
I think Got To Dance is unique in the fact that it’s an extremely positive programme. Even the people who aren’t put through get some extremely constructive criticism from three of the best dancers in the world. Nobody goes away empty-handed. They all receive that golden nugget to help them improve. What’s lovely is that we’ve had people who have auditioned twice before and this time they’ve been put through to the judges’ short list. And it is that type of programme where you do feel like you can come back and have another go and put the judges’ advice into practice.
Why do you think the show is so popular?
Got To Dance has such a positive energy. My husband watches all the shows I do and, of all the programmes I’ve been involved with, this is his favourite. He’s a 42-year-old man, but he just loves it. There’s something for everyone and it’s great family entertainment.
Are you looking forward to getting back into the studio for the live shows? Is it a great atmosphere?
It’s the programme everybody wants to come to watch. All my friends and their kids want to come to see the live shows. The atmosphere in there is electric.
What have been the standout moments from the last two series for you?
In this new series, the judges get up on the stage during the auditions, which makes for fun memorable moments. And some of the standout moments from this year’s auditions are with very young or very old acts. In fact, I think we’ve put our youngest ever act through to the short list. From the previous series, last year’s finale was amazing and I was so thrilled for Chris and Wes when they won. Plus, I’ll never forget Happiness because she was so unique.
How are the judges this year? Have any of them softened a little or toughened up?
The boys have definitely got a lot tougher this year and there’s less changing of minds. They’re a lot less likely to change a red star to gold. One of the best things about this show is that the judges don’t know what colour star the others are giving the contestants, and sometimes they’re so surprised by what’s revealed.
If you could choose anybody to join the panel as a guest judge, who would it be?
Chris and Wes. They’d be so funny and spice things up a little.
And what about your dance abilities? Have they improved since you’ve worked on the series?
I’ve watched the auditions so many times now that I keep thinking I can do some of these moves myself. But, when I try, I can’t at all and it’s very depressing. I watch and I think: “I can do that,” but then I can’t and I think: “Oh my God, look at me. I’m rubbish!” I try to practise in the bathroom and in the bedroom, but I just can’t do it.
