First News interviews best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson
We had a chat with Tracy’s creator to discuss Comic Relief’s work, her famous collection of rings and who she has a soft spot for…
What was it like writing a short story for charity compared to writing one of your books?
Initially I thought: “Oh gosh!”. I usually do two books a year anyway and anything more is a bit of a pressure. But it’s a very good cause. Tracey Beaker is my most popular character so I thought it would be sensible to use her. When I write about Tracy Beaker it’s as if she takes over my personality and it’s not hard at all. I found it a really good easy thing to write.
How did you choose Barney Hammond to be included in the story?
I’ve had a soft spot for Barney since he was on the radio. I wanted a comedian to be in Tracy Beaker’s Thumping Heart and I kept thinking of comedians who just weren’t right for the book. And then I thought that Barney isn’t a comedian but works on comedy programmes and is just lovely with children and I thought he would be a good choice. He seems like such a nice guy.
I went on Swap Shop last Saturday and my publicist told them that I’m an old lady and I must not be dumped in the gunk! I thought long and hard about what to take to swap. I had a very nice cardboard cut-out of Tracy Beaker so I took that.

Do you have a favourite TV show?I have a very soft spot for Blue Peter. I’ve been on there so many times I can’t quite remember! I’ve very proud of the fact that I have a gold Blue Peter badge and, last time I did something for their 25th anniversary, they took the 25th anniversary badge and turned it into a ring, which was very sweet. It was such a lovely traditional programme and I was most alarmed to see that the BBC controller wants it to become a bit like Top Gear. I think it should be left the way it is.
