First News interviews Amy Adams

Want the inside scoop on the nutty new Disney movie, The Muppets? You got it! First News catches up with the film’s star, Amy Adams, to get the lowdown…

How did you get involved with the new Muppet movie?

Jason Segel and Kermit the Frog put together a DVD asking me to be in The Muppets. Jason had written me a song and Kermit gave a personalised message on the DVD – and it really moved me.

Amazing! Did you immediately sign up for the role?

I did. I grew up with the Muppets, so there was no way I could say no to Kermit the Frog. I enjoyed the Muppets so much when I was a kid that I knew this would be the perfect role for me.

Did you have a favourite Muppets character when you were little?

I’ve worked with them all now, so it’s very difficult to pick a favourite. However, I’d have to say that Fozzie Bear was my favourite when I was growing up.

Why Fozzie?

I was a kid and he was really cute. He was fuzzy. He told jokes on stage and he said: “Wocka wocka!” He’s the best!

Is it true that you sing and dance in the movie?

There are a few musical numbers in the movie – and some of them are huge. We had a lot of fun with them. At one point, we shut down a huge, busy street in Hollywood to shoot a big song and dance number involving 200 dancers. It was amazing!

What’s it like to sing with the Muppets?

It’s awesome. It was also amazing to sing and dance alongside Jason Segel, who plays a guy called Gary in the movie. It’s so funny when you see him with the Muppets because he’s so tall and they are so short – but he was great with the dancing. He even did some lifts! He did a very good job.

Your character sings with Miss Piggy. What was she like?

Miss Piggy was always very polite but didn’t want to talk to me off camera, and I have worked with a few actresses like that, so I left her alone! I was not going to steal any of her spotlight and I think she knew that.

How would you describe your character?

I play a girl called Mary in the movie. Mary is a small-town girl who has been the girlfriend of Gary for a while. They plan a trip to Los Angeles and she thinks it’s going to be very romantic – but it doesn’t quite turn out like that.

What happens?

Well, she ends up helping to get the Muppets back together again to save The Muppet Studios, along with Gary and a new Muppet called Walter.

What can you tell us about Walter?

Walter is a very genuine and earnest Muppet. He’s really looking to find himself in the movie. He loves the Muppets and he loves Kermit the Frog and all of these great characters. He’s been a big fan for years – and it’s actually Walter who pushes the Muppets to get back together again.

What do you like about your character?

To be honest, I just wanted to be a part of The Muppets movie. If they told me that I was playing a spider crawling along the ground without saying a word, I probably would have said yes.

Is Mary fun to play?

Definitely! Mary is a small-town girl and that’s fun for me. I’m a huge fan of musical theatre and that’s also part of the movie, which is also fun. Musical theatre is something that I’ve done before and really enjoyed, so I knew I was going to have a good time shooting everything for The Muppets.

What’s the message of the movie?

The Muppets have always had a message about believing in yourself and sticking by your friends, so I think that’s the message of the movie. They always show you that you’ll be stronger as a group rather than as an individual.

Why should we go and see the movie?

Because it’s a lot of fun and it’s the Muppets! Trust me, you’re going to have the time of your life. All of the gang are in the movie. Everyone from Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie to Gonzo and the Swedish Chef. You’re going to love it.
