First News interview Mitchel Musso

We catch up with actor and pop star Mitchel Musso to find out all about his brand new TV show…

Hi Mitchel! Tell us all about your new show.

My new show is called Pair Of Kings – and I couldn’t ask for a better gig. It’s a comedy about a pair of teenage twins who become kings of a magical island called Kinkow. It’s an amazing show and is hilarious to watch. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It’s such an adventure! We have tonnes of action, tonnes of comedy and tonnes of drama. It’s quite manic, to be honest. It’s like making a movie every single episode.

Who do you play on Pair Of Kings?

My character is a guy called Brady. Brady and his twin brother, Boomer, grew up in Chicago where they weren’t the coolest kids in school. They lived with their aunt and uncle, but they soon discover that their parents were the king and queen of the mysterious island of Kinkow – and these two teenagers have now inherited the island.

If you were made king for a day in real life, what would be your first act as king?

I feel like I’m king every day because I get to work on a show like this and have so much fun. I’m the luckiest guy in the world! But I guess I would declare a free day where money was abolished. Everyone in the world would be fed and get what they need on that day. I’m not sure how I’d do that, but I’d sure try.

The show is filmed in front of a live audience. Does that make things easier or harder for you as an actor?

After working on sitcoms, to be honest, I don’t think I could ever work on a television show that didn’t have a live audience! I love playing off the crowd and, as far as I’m concerned, the more people in the room the better it’s going to be. I’m like a band at a concert when the crowd gets going.

You obviously found fame on Hannah Montana. How does being on Pair of Kings differ to that experience?

They’re really different shows, you know. Hannah Montana was about singing, fame and dresses and this is about swords, money and magic. Hannah Montana will always be close to my heart but I’m excited to be doing Pair of Kings now. It’s a different kind of adventure this show.

What do you enjoy most about being an actor?

I love the fact that I get to entertain people. I can be a different person every day when I act – and I think that’s really cool. I love everything about entertaining people, although my ultimate dream is to be a rock star. I’d love to be a rock star for the rest of my life.

Do you enjoy being famous?

I wouldn’t say that I’m famous and I wouldn’t say that I necessarily enjoy fame – but I do like it when people respect what I do. I also love having fans out there. It’s wonderful to be able to inspire people and help them with their dreams and things like that. It’s a great feeling to help others.

What’s been your weirdest fan encounter?

I’ve got some amazing fans. I’ve had some crazy fan encounters during my time on the road as a singer. I performed a concert once when a girl jumped up on stage and came running towards me. I was singing away and I started to freak out because I could see her get closer and closer – but I had no idea what she was going to do. I just had to carry on with the performance and hope for the best.

What happened?

Security ran on stage to try and grab her, but she was too fast for them. I was thinking: “Oh my gosh! This girl is going to attack me. What do I do?” But I carried on singing and she stopped when she got near me – and gave me a huge kiss on the cheek. It was hilarious! She had a little dance with me as I sang the rest of the song.

Finally, have you got any tips for aspiring performers?

I guess, do want you want to do. Whether you want to be a singer or an accountant or the future Einstein, follow your heart and keep pushing for what you want to do because, the more you work at something, the better you’re going to be at it.

Pair of Kings, starring Mitchel Musso, premieres Monday to Wednesday at 5.00pm on Disney XD throughout January from Monday 3 January 2011.
