Exclusive interview with WWE Superstar Kofi Kingston

Exclusive interview with WWE Superstar Kofi Kingston

Kofi Kingston and his tag partner Evan Bourne have made some WWE fans realise why they used to love tag team wrestling so much.

As Air Boom, the pair have livened up tag matches on our screens again. We talked exclusively to Kofi recently to find out whether the praise has gone to his head.

A few people have credited Air Boom with reviving the art of tag team wrestling. What do you guys do that’s so special?

I think myself and Evan are two very unique individuals that make even more of a unique tag team, and that is what people like about us. We go out there and try to outdo each other and we both live to entertain our fans each and every night.

Why do you think you work so well together?

I think we have the same mindset and we are two high flyers that will do anything to win a match. We both go out there and are dedicated to each other and the WWE universe.

What do you think are the good and bad points about tag team compared to solo?

Well the good part is that you are not the only one getting beat up all the time! I don’t think there is any bad part, we are the champions right now. As a WWE Superstar you try to be the best, and I guess being the tag team champions we can say we are the best at what we do.

Most WWE Superstars have good-sized egos. Do you find it hard sharing the limelight with a partner?

No, definitely not. I think both of us want to be the best, but we’re sharing the limelight because they gave us two titles. If they only gave us one there might be an argument about who is taking it home!

While we’re talking about egos, how big would you say yours is?

Well, I definitely don’t think I’m cocky or ignorant. I always want to go out and have a great match and anything less than the best is not acceptable. I guess you can say my ego is pretty big because I hold myself to such high standards.

Which WWE Superstar do you think has the biggest ego?

Probably Alberto Del Rio. He is cocky and ignorant in a lot of different ways and he thinks he is better then everyone.

What was your favourite moment at this year’s SummerSlam?

My match was my favourite moment. Being able to go out there with Evan and Rey and win was pretty cool. Having my hand held up at the end of the match was most memorable.

Did you feel more pressure to perform because it’s such a big event?

You definitely feel the pressure, especially as SummerSlam is one of the biggest and best shows of the year. However, I feel pressure to perform to that high standard every single night and I put that on myself. I always want to deliver.

Did you have a little dance when Cee Lo Green performed?

I did not do a dance, although I kind of wanted to. I didn’t get a chance to meet him, but I’ve been a huge fan since his Goodie Mob days. I didn’t dance but probably should have!

Is competing in a ladder match more of a thrill than a straight bout?

It’s definitely a lot scarier than a normal match, just because you have the added risk of failing off a ladder, but it does get my adrenaline going. Most of my ladder matches have had multiple people involved and that makes it a lot more dangerous. As WWE Superstars we always try to explain to kids at home that they should never try to replicate what they see us do in the ring. We are trained professionals and there is still a great risk, so I urge all of our fans not to try it at home.

What’s it like being up there, knowing that you could be sent crashing to earth in an instant?

I try no to think about it. I love being a high flyer and taking risks but I’m also a trained professional. They say with risk comes reward, and I apply that to my match and usually it works out. Safety always comes first, though.

In case you missed the wrestling event of the year, or just want to re-live it all over again, WWE SummerSlam 2011 is out to own on DVD and Blu-ray from 21 November. Check out the trailer below!
