Chantelle lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo: this is her story
Chantelle lives in the Democractic Republic of Congo, where five million people have died since 1998 as a result of the conflict there. Chantelle and her family fled violence in their village and came to Sange where Oxfam is working.
Instead of living in a makeshift camp, many refugees live with families who have opened their homes to those who have lost everything. Chantelle and her family now live with Marie and her family.
Chantelle says: “I like Marie because she is generous. She always waits for me to eat. Sometimes she lets me wear her clothes. I think we will be friends forever. I can’t go to school here because there are no schools for displaced children and my family has no money to pay the fees. I love reading and I wish I could go to school and learn. When Marie’s home from school she teaches me everything they’ve learned. She also lets me read her books.”
