Campaign aims to stop food waste. Read on to find out how you can help…
Did you know that more than 8.3 tonnes of food is thrown away every year in the UK?
WRAP’s campaign, Love Food Hate Waste, wants everyone to realise that by making a small difference to how much food we throw away, we can all save money and help the environment.
Not only does throwing away food that could be eaten cost the average family with children £680 a year, but if we stop doing it the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking one in four cars off the road. Wasting food is also a waste of resources – just think of all the energy, water and packaging that is used in food production, transportation and storage.
But there are some simple things you can do to cut down on your food waste…
Make the most of your leftovers. Last night’s lamb or chicken can make a tasty sandwich for your packed lunch.
Freeze or store food correctly to make it last. For example, you can put apples in the fridge to keep them fresher for longer.
Think before you throw something away. If your spuds are sprouting, don’t bin them – just give them a good peel and they’ll make delicious mash.
Make sure your eyes aren’t bigger than your belly. Only cook what you are going to eat.
Start composting – put all those peelings to good use in your garden.
