British Airways will be the first airline in Europe to produce jet fuel from rubbish
The airline has struck a deal to build the first plant in Europe to produce jet fuel from rubbish.
The plant will be built in east London and will produce fuel from around 2014.
BA says there will be enough fuel produced to power all its flights from London City Airport.
The best waste matter for the plant would have a high amount of carbon in it. The waste will be fed into a high temperature “gasifier” which will produce BioSynGas. Then a chemical process turns the gas into biofuel.
Waste products from the process will be used to power the plant and will also supply electricity to the national grid.
The other good news is that the plant will create around 1,200 new jobs in the area.
