Boris Johnson wants to ban plastic bags
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, wants London to be plastic bag-free by the time the Olympics are held in 2012.
The Republic of Ireland cut plastic bag use by 90% when it introducd a 15 cent charge per bag in 2002. Mr Johnson wants to see the same effect here.
He says: “If all UK shoppers cut out just one in five bags, it would save about 40,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases a year – equivalent to taking over 12,500 cars off the road for a year.”
The Mayor plans to discuss with supermarket bosses the best way to discourage shoppers from picking up a plastic bag.
