Astronomers have discovered the brightest and most massive star known to man.

Biggest star known to man found!

Astronomers have discovered the brightest and most massive star known to man.

Up until now, experts had thought that stars could not get any heavier than 150 times the weight of our own sun.

However, a star known as R136a1 has been spotted by scientists using the European Southern Observatory’s excellently-named Very Large Telescope (VLT).

This star is currently 265 times heavier than the sun, but could have been up to 320 times heavier when it was ‘born’.

It is so bright, that astronomers say that it is almost ten million times brighter than our sun. If you imagine how much brighter the sun is compared to the full moon, that’s how much brighter this star would be compared to the sun.
