Backstage at Sainsbury's Super Saturday!
Find out what happened when First News headed down to Sainsbury’s Super Saturday, the celebration which marks one year to go until the London 2012 Paralympic Games. We caught up with artists like The Wanted and The Saturdays.
Lots of superstars including Pixie Lott, Olly Murs, and Nicola Roberts took to Clapham Common to perform at Sainsbury’s Super Saturday.
The day was organised to raise support for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
So the event offered live Paralympic sport demonstrations by Great Britain’s very own Paralympic athletes, showcasing goalball, table tennis and wheelchair tennis demonstrations. We particularly enjoyed watching wheelchair basketball!
Other fun activities on offer included trampolining, a bouncy castle and an inflatable obstacle course!
And, of course, throughout the day some of Britain’s top pop acts took to the main stage to lead the celebrations.
Girls Aloud star turned solo singer Nicola Roberts kicked things off with her latest single, Lucky Day. Performance highlights included Pixie Lott performing her latest hit, All About Tonight, along with other classic Pixie tunes! And, of course, one of our favourite boy bands, The Wanted, treated guests to a brilliant set which included a performance of their upcoming single, Lightning.
In between performances, the VIP area was definitely the place to be. We were treated to amazing gourmet food, got to try our hand at various sports and even got to have our faces painted!
Everywhere we turned we were rubbing shoulders with celebrities. Best of all, as VIP guests, First News got to hang out backstage and chat with some of the performers on the day…
Backstage gossip...
We tracked down the Sugababes and managed to have a quick chat before their performance:
Are you looking forward to today?
Amelle: We are so excited! There are so many great performers in the line-up and it’s just a great celebration. We’re ready to get on stage now.
Tell us about your new single.
Jade: The new single’s called Freedom. It’s like a taster of what to expect from our new album. It’s quite upbeat and up-tempo. It’s a positive song as well, so we’re enjoying singing about happy things at the moment!
Next we bumped into Nathan from The Wanted, who was eating a particularly large ice cream. It was melting by the second, so we made our chat quick!
That ice cream looks yummy!
I know, but I’m trying to figure how to eat it because it’s melting too quickly!
How excited are The Wanted to be part of Sainsbury’s Super Saturday?
Nathan: Really excited! It’s great for the Paralympic games. It’s a really nice way of raising awareness. It’s just superb. It was a very last minute thing for us, though, but we’re so excited to be a part of it. Because we joined the line-up so late we’re not actually on any of the posters, so we ‘ve been going around and adding our names to any we see!
Following our chat with Nathan, the rest of The Wanted told us that the highlight of their summer was seeing First News and they even sang a rendition of You Are My Sunshine to us (WATCH BELOW!). We also managed to grab Vanessa and Rochelle from The Saturdays (the others were still getting ready) for a gossip minutes before they went on stage:
How are you feeling about performing at Sainsbury’s Super Saturday?
Rochelle: Very excited! We’re looking forward to putting on a show. We’ll be performing four songs: Ego, Higher, Notorious and our new single, All Fired Up.
What’s coming up for The Saturdays?
Vanessa: We’ve got our first arena rour in December! It’s our first one, so we’re really excited about it. We start rehearsals for it soon. We’re really looking forward to performing some new stuff on tour.
You’re just about to go on stage! Do you have any rituals you have to do before you perform?
Rochelle: We have to high-five each other! We’ve decided it’s bad luck if we don’t.
