Are you in an eco group?
A few weeks ago First News reader Robbie Jansen told us about the light bulb logo he designed at school to encourage pupils to turn off lights. Here Robbie tells us about his concerns for the environment and what else his Eco Group are doing to fight it…
I am very worried about the environment. I am very worried that so many people drive cars, buses, lorries and lots more. People work in factories that cause pollution and lots of children leave on lights, TVs and computers. All these things make the world hotter and in some years’ time the ice in the North Pole will melt and the water will come down to flood all of the northern hemisphere and then people will suffer. That is also another reason why all these animals are dying. Did you know that 40% of the energy is used when the computer is on standby?
Trees are good for the environment because they breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. But if we cut down all the trees then too much carbon dioxide would make the atmosphere warm up!
The Eco Group has also been given four troughs to grow vegetables. We will collect the water from the rain and we will grow our vegetables organically, without using chemicals. The things we have bought are a water butt, some seeds and a strawberry pot. When the vegetables have grown we will give them to our school kitchen staff to make into gorgeous meals for all the children in Rudston School.
The Eco Group have also put labels next to all the taps in school with the slogan: “Splish, splash, splosh… turn it off,” reminding us to conserve water as well at Rudston. It will also save the school money so they will be able to buy more valuable resources for children and teachers at my school.
