Air pollution in the UK is killing 50,000 people a year

Air pollution in the UK is killing 50,000 people a year, according to a government report.

A government report has found that air pollution in the UK is killing 50,000 people a year.

The report found that polluted air can cause health problems such as asthma, breathing problems and heart disease, which dramatcally lowers your life expectancy.

More people die every year from air pollution than from passive smoking or obesity, the report found.

In areas where air pollution is greatest, dirty air can lower a person's life expectancy by up to eight or nine years.

70% of pollution is thought to be caused by transport, so the government are asking people to drive diesel cars, which they say are more fuel efficient.

If the UK does not cut down on air pollution, they will face a big fine from the European Union of £30 million. At the moment the dirty air is costing the health service £20.2 billion a year to treat.
