John Wyndham Books
By kitsunela (Age 12)
Hello everyone,
Does anyone here read any John Wyndham books? He's most famous for writing The Day of the Triffids, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel published in the 60s. But he also wrote a number of other works, including The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids, Chocky, The Midwich Cuckoos, The Trouble with Lichen and a number of short stories. I recently discovered his works and have so far read The Day of the Triffids, Chocky, The Kraken Wakes and the first chapters of The Chrysalids. In my opinion all of his novels are excellent and I would recommend them to anyone. He writes very bleak, poignant and memorable books. Also his sci-fi ideas are brilliant. The Triffids in particular are just amazing, seven foot tall mobile plants which lurch around and sting people to death with a ten foot tendril. The xenobathites of The Kraken Wakes are equally memorable, though not visually, as we don’t strictly see them for the entire novel. But their methods of taking over the world over a period of several years are most advanced, particularly when they raid villages with sea-tanks.
Though, a note of caution, John Wyndham’s books can be just a little bit horrific in places and rather slow-going at times.
