Goodnight Mr Tom

By uniquegirl (Age 12)

Book title: Goodnight Mr Tom - you don't actually find out why it's called this until a couple of chapters but once you  know it's a perfect name.

Author: Michelle Magorian

What type of book is it? I would describe it as mainly historical fiction, but it's one of those books that sometimes make you feel unbelievably sad, then the next minute amazingly happy with tears running down your cheeks.

What is it about? Young Willie Beech is evacuated to the country as Britain stands on the brink of WW2. A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the care of old Tom Oakley - but his new-found happiness is shattered by a summons from his mother back in London...

The best bit was...My favourite part was when Mr Tom kidnaps Willie from the horrible hospital in London and all the villagers and Zach welcome him and make him feel better, or maybe the first time that Willie tells Mr Tom that he loves him.

Who would you recommend this for? Generally 8-12 year olds, but if you're older or younger and you have a thirst for historical fiction then this would also be great, though 8 and below may want to read it with a parent or a grown up or suggest it at school.

Have you read any other books by this author? No, but I intend to.

We had to read it as a class book. To be honest, I hope I don't offend you but I didn't really like the book at all. :(

I agree completely with 09bensonc about trying those other books by Michelle Magorian as they are great, especially Just Henry. I also went to see Goodnight Mister Tom at the the theatre the other day and my favourite character was definitely Zach and it was so sad when he died. :( :(
