First News readers interview SpongeBob SquarePants exec producer Paul Tibbitt!

By nwilliams

This Jubilee weekend sees Nickelodeon UK celebrating the Top 100 SpongeBob SquarePants episodes, as voted for by Nick UK viewers.

So to celebrate, we asked YOU to interview SpongeBob SquarePants exec producer Paul Tibbitt!

Check out the interview below to see if he answered your question…

Where did the idea for SpongeBob come from?

kicky105 (Age 12)

The idea came from Steve Hillenburg, a marine biologist/artist. He started as a teacher at the Ocean Institute in California, where he cooked up the idea.

What is a typical day of work for you?

Laurakat1 (Age 15)

My exact involvement is to look at and listen to every aspect of the cartoon from original idea to final product, and make sure that it holds up to our rigorous standards.

My favourite episode is Sailor Mouth what is yours ?

harrison9 (Age 11)

Hey, my middle name is Harrison! My favorite episode is “The Algae’s Always Greener”, but “Sailor Mouth” is second.

Is making SpongeBob fun?

CandyEllz (Age 11)

Yes, it is. Making a cartoon and getting paid for it? Couldn’t ask for a better job!

Why do the characters never age even though they have birthdays?

Pengi

That’s the best thing about being a cartoon…you look great even when you get old.

What advice would you give someone who want to be a producer in the future?

angel1234 (Age 14)

Whatever it is you want to be in the future, don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t do it. Just keep at it.

If you had to invent a new character what would you call it and why?

angel1234 (Age 14)

Good question. I’ll let you know as soon as I come up with one.

Did you belive Spongebob would have been as successful as he is today?

CHERUB15 (Age 13)

I always believed SpongeBob was a great cartoon, but never imagined we’d still be on after all these years. Thanks to all you amazing fans for letting us keep him going!

Did you always dream of being who you are and doing what you do?

Mouse1999 (Age 13)

Oddly, yes. I always wanted to make cartoons. I used to make flip books in the corners of all my mum’s paperback books, and she never got cross with me for doing it.

My teacher always tells me to think how can i improve my work. How can you improve spongebob?

 nayanpayan (Age 7)

We always are trying to make the show better. Sometimes we can, and other times it just stays plain awesome.

Are you like any of the SpongeBob characters ?

LeLe (Age 15)

I’m a little like Mr. Krabs because I’m the boss.

What are you planning to do for your next big episode?

saffie2468 (Age 10)
I would love to tell you...but wouldn’t you rather be surprised when it comes on TV?

How long does it take to create one episode?

Coolio96 (Age 10)

One 11-minute cartoon takes about nine months. Give or take a few days.

When you make an episode, are you trying to teach morals and life lessons, or just entertain?

lukep

We just want to make people laugh. If you learn something, it’s not our fault.

Why has Mr Krab's got a whale for a daughter?

han632 (Age 6)

The sea holds many mysteries that man was never meant to know. This is one of those.

Sponges are a strange thing to base a main character on. Why did you choose a typically overlooked quiet sea creature to be such a wild ball of fun?

• elvy106 (Age 10)

Trying to raise Sponge awareness, I suppose. Plus what a great idea...the most sedentary creature in the sea, portrayed as the most hyper-active!

Why does sponge bob drink water when he lives in water?

Cheryl88

You can’t drink salt water, silly!

If you weren't a producer, what would you be?

 lauzaroo (Age 16)

Unemployed.

How are you going to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in Bikini Bottom?

Clarehan (Age 9)

Tea and Krabby Patties, of course!!

I'm only 3 and a half but wanted to know if you purposefully created a theme tune that my mummy can't stop singing all day?

ickle (Age 3)

We wanted it to keep you tuned in for the show...but if it gets stuck in your head, that’s an added bonus!

Want more? The 100 SpongeBob stories, as chosen by you the viewers, will air from noon to 5 p.m. from Monday, 4 June with the most popular episode, as decided by the UK public, broadcast at 4:45 p.m. on Friday 8 June.

UK celebrities including Pixie Lott and the cast of VicTORious will appear as part of the top 100 countdown to introduce the episodes that got their vote.
