Creative writing

Claire's Diary, 15th, 18th October 1939

15thOctober 1939

I have had a terrifying, but brilliant idea. I know I don't want the boys to go off fighting without me, and I have a solution. I will dress up as man, and put myself forward for the RAF. After all, people always say I should have been born a boy, wearing trousers and a shirt. I look a like a boy already, because I have quite short hair, as short as mother would allow, and I am, as you already know, very tall for my age. I am sure I would be able to pass for 15 at least, if not 16. I know that you are supposed to be 17 or something, but to be honest, I don't really think that anyone will stop me! Anyway, I won't go for a while yet, as I need to prepare my plans. I am not sure how to tackle mother and father yet, I need to think!

I have stolen some of Wills old clothes for me to wear on enrolment day and to take with me. I can't wait to learn how to fly a plane! I have decided to just write a note to Mum and Dad when I leave, explaining everything. I won't be able to face telling them in person, and I am sure they would convince me out of it if I did.
